World’s leading events organisers stunned with Cape Town

A delegation of the world’s leading conference, meetings and association management companies spent the past week in Cape Town to discuss ways of unlocking Africa’s growth potential to advance the meetings and events sector on the continent.

Cape Town and Western Cape Convention Bureau and Minister Alan Winde hosted INCON delegates with other key players in the public and private sector.

The INCON Partners collectively manage budgets in excess of €1 billion across 170 destinations were thrilled with their experience. Inge Hanser, INCON Co Chair remarked: «Cape Town is a remarkable city with multiple cultures offering such a warm welcome. We look forward to return with congresses in the future».

MCI South Africa, Managing Director, Rashid Toefy, who was instrumental in bringing everyone together noted «The conference, meetings and events sector plays a pivotal role in spurring economic growth and job creation in the country and hosting INCON provided an ideal platform to showcase Cape Town’s desirability in terms of its world class conference capabilities and investment potential».

The challenge for Cape Town, according to Wesgro CEO, Tim Harris, is for the city to leverage its leisure destination reputation and to position itself as a conference destination of choice.

Economic Opportunities MEC, Alan Winde said that government invested in the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) more than a decade ago. Since opening its doors the centre has contributed in excess of R 22 billion to the national economy.

Many of the INCON Partners had not been to Cape Town in some years and were delighted to see how the city is now geared to attract major international congresses.

The Cape Town & Western Cape Convention Bureau promotes Cape Town and the Western Cape as a premier destination for meetings, incentives, conferences, events, exhibitions and trade fairs. Cape Town Tourism has partnerships with more than 2500 industry service providers which operate excellent venues, facilities and services across the city. The Bureau works with these businesses to secure, and successfully host, world-­‐class  events and conferences.
