There are few venues in the world that capture a genuine local spirit of welcome more eloquently than Hawai‘i Convention Center (HCC). The experience of attending any event at HCC is conveyed in a single word – ‘Aloha’. Commonly used as a greeting; it is an expression of love, affection, peace and compassion. What atmosphere can be more conducive for business than that?

“The Hawai‘i Convention Center is driven by a set of values that reflect a deep respect for the planners they work with and the guests who visit the Center each day. Included in these values is “Aloha: To extend an unconditional hand of friendship to a stranger as an intimate gesture of welcome.” Teri Orton, HCC ‘s General Manager.

The Aloha Spirit in Action

Attendees at the Hawai‘i Convention Center get to experience first-hand Hawai‘i’s legendary aloha spirit. The aloha spirit inspires people to be genuinely caring and respectful, resulting in a hospitable environment that is ideal for cultivating new ideas, strengthening existing relationships and building new ones.

“The aloha spirit is something that’s quite real. Often in business, you’re constantly stressed, you’re under pressure with deadlines, budgets and so forth, and when you’re meeting in Hawai‘i  there’s a sense of relief… It makes it easier to learn and network, and just makes it a wonderful experience.”  – David Nershi, Executive Director of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP)

“The aloha spirit pretty much permeates everything in Hawai‘i.  When you first arrive, you think it’s maybe a little bit gimmicky, everyone you meet says “aloha” and puts a lei around your neck. But in time you find that it really is the spirit of the place. Our attendees, no matter where they’re from…have started to say “aloha” every time they meet one another. It’s a very friendly experience everywhere and it’s true whether you’re in a cab or whether you’re on a bus or in a big restaurant – it really is the aloha spirit. Perhaps hard to define but certainly here.” – David Martin, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice-President of the Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM)

A Taste of Hawai‘i

The Hawai‘i Convention Center, under AEG Facilities, provides an unmatched culinary experience for its guests. The menus and selections reflect the diversity of Hawai‘i with cultural flexibility and culinary creativity.

The Center is home to one of the state’s largest production kitchens, with 20,000 square feet (2,000sqm) of space built to help chefs prepare tantalizing entrees featuring a variety of regional flavors. The center’s in-house catering team works with planners months in advance to design customized menus that cater specifically to their attendees.

“It is not an easy task to feed 10,000 people twice a day. The food is really very good, and not only that, it is reasonably priced, and you don’t see that combination very often. Our No. 1 complaint on our evaluation forms, quite often, is the food. Not here at the Hawai‘i Convention Center.” – Christine Phelps, Deputy Executive Director of the American Academy of Neurology.

Aloha ‘Āina (Love of the Land)

Since opening in 1998, the Hawai‘i Convention Center has also integrated a respect for Hawai‘i’s environment in all aspects of its operations. The Center has implemented a variety of efforts to enhance the conservation of Hawai‘i’s natural resources and reduce its impact on the environment.

Whether its focusing on energy efficiency with lighting and cooling within the building, supporting local farmers, ranchers and purveyors in curating menus for our events, or recycling and re-purposing event-generated waste, a focus on conservation and being mindful of the environment is considered in all aspects of our planning and operations of the Hawai‘i Convention Center.

The Hawai‘i Convention Center is a proud participant in AEG’s corporate environmental sustainability program AEG 1EARTH and is one of 18 venues worldwide that attained 75 percent of waste diverted from landfills.

In 2016, the Center expanded this commitment to sustainability through a partnership with the Hawai‘ian Legacy Reforestation Initiative, a non-profit organization that has led the permanent reforestation of more than 340,000 endemic trees on Hawai’i Island. The Hawai‘i Convention Center has committed to planting 1 million native trees across Hawai‘i.

“This landmark reforestation effort underscores the Hawai‘i Convention Center’s longstanding commitment to practices that enhance the conservation of Hawai‘i’s natural resources and the perpetuation of Hawai‘ian culture. This is in direct alignment with our multi-faceted sustainability plan, which includes energy efficiency, water conservation, air quality, waste reduction and sustainable purchasing.” – Teri Orton, HCC’s General Manager.

Premier Facilities

Designed by world-renowned architects Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG) and LMN, the Hawai‘i Convention Center’s striking open-air design, abundant natural light and lush landscaping offers a meetings backdrop unlike anywhere else in the world. The Center’s unique design brings the outdoors inside and allows attendees to experience a true Hawai‘ian sense of place. It is Hawai‘i’s largest, premier meetings facility with 1.1 million square feet of total meeting space.

The inspiring atmosphere of Hawai‘i and the design of the Hawai‘i Convention Center provide a nurturing environment that encourages networking and allows delegates to be open and receptive to sharing new ideas, often leading to increased productivity, synergy and successful events.

“The bright, breezy hallways and layout allows attendees to experience Hawai‘i, even while attending their meetings.”  Darren Mendola, Senior Director of Conference Services, Alzheimer’s Association.

“In Hawai‘i, our members tend to be more relaxed. They tend to be more introspective. And we certainly seem to have a lot more fun…. It’s always best to be relaxed and receptive when you’re trying to learn.” Albert Morris Jr., MD, National Medical Association.

Global Expertise and Satisfied Clients

Under the management of AEG, the Hawai‘i Convention Center’s satisfaction ratings from meeting planners remain consistently between 95-100%.

In 2016, AIPC – the International Association of Convention Centres – ranked the Hawai‘i Convention Center third in the “World’s Best Congress Centre AIPC Apex Award”. It was the first year that the Hawai‘i Convention Center submitted an entry for consideration.

The award is based on an extensive analysis of client feedback via detailed surveys, and reflects an unbiased picture of a center’s performance as seen through the client’s eyes.  The recognition speaks to its consistently high client satisfaction ratings in relation to over 180 international convention centers worldwide.
