Brussels Dances in Berlin on 3 and 4 November 2017

Radical System, Contemporary Dance from Brussels

Brussels.- More than 20 dancers and choreographers from Brussels have been invited to dance on 3 and 4 November 2017 at the prestigious Radialsystem in Berlin. Under the auspices of the German choreographer Sasha Waltz, the Radical System festival will showcase the diversity and radicalism of the new generation of Brussels contemporary dance.

Brussels and Berlin united by dance for years

Many dancers and choreographers split their living and working time between Berlin and Brussels. «The German capital was ideally suited to follow ‘ Indiscipline ‘, the contemporary art festival we organized in 2016 at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. This year, with the spotlight on our dancers and choreographers, Brussels will shine again.” Rachid Madrane, Minister in charge of the Promotion of Brussels at the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

Radialsystem, Berlin’s renowned dance centre, and Sasha Waltz, the leading figure of German contemporary dance, cannot wait to discover the creations of the young Brussels dance scene. They also rejoice in the exchanges among dancers of the two cities.

Radical System: a festival without linguistic borders

» The project is a beautiful manifestation of what happens when the energies of two linguistic communities come together in a programme that promotes the richness and diversity of Brussels’ contemporary dance.» Tom Bonte, Director Beursschouwburg.

Radical System Contemporary Dance from Brussels, is an initiative of Mr. Madrane, implemented by in collaboration with the Beursschouwburg, the Brigittines, the Halles de Schaerbeek and the Kaaitheater.

» If Brussels is called a crossroads of cultures, I see more and more people dancing on it.” Guy Gypens, Director, Kaaitheater.

The Brussels scene favours the emergence of new talents and experimentation. Its common denominator?

The radicalism of the language.

» The freedom with which the definition of ‘ dance ‘ is continuously defied and sharpened is at the core of the Brussels dance scene’s DNA. I think that this is exactly why Brussels is so internationally attractive and why it is so well known as a city of dance.» Tom Bonte added.

Programme to be announced in September 2017

The programme brings together more than 20 dancers and choreographers of ten different nationalities, all of whom either live or work in Brussels. Major dance stars of the past give way to the younger generation who will show Berlin that the Brussels dance scene has lost none of the vigour for which it was known in the 1980s. Moreover, rumour has it that a project created on site assemble artists from Berlin and from Brussels.
