2019 International Bar Association Annual Conference

Hosted in Seoul

The six-day event united 6,000 legal experts from 131 countries.

IBA 2019 Seoul took place from Sept. 22-27. The annual event is the largest gathering of the legal profession, drawing 6,000 worldwide this year, uniting global attorneys and other legal experts from prominent law firms, often called as the ‘Olympics’ for legal professionals.

In 2015, the Seoul Metropolitan Government signed an MOU with the Korean Bar Association and presented the Korean capital’s case with World Bar Association presidents, citing the high potential socioeconomic benefits of hosting the conference. Convinced by the Seoul presentation, the WBA board of directors selected the city for the 2019 annual conference. A formal agreement was made between the WBA chairman and Mayor of Seoul Park Won-soon in November 2018.

The conference covered various legal issues across 264 separate sessions, and also included an official luncheon and dinner. There also was a post-tourism program for attendees, while on the 22nd, a K-pop concert was held in front of COEX, offering a contemporary taste of Korean culture.

As part of the city’s PLUS SEOUL program for enhancing international conferences, IBA participants were provided with an on-site Seoul Information Booth, as well as a mobile information booth nearby Coex to help attendees navigate through the area. Participants were given Seoul Welcome Kits, which contained a Seoul MICE transportation card, map of Seoul, and souvenirs. The city also displayed event welcome messages in subways and other locations, further raising awareness of the gathering. In addition, participants had chances to try the traditional Korean costumes on and create their own Seoul-themed postcards. PLUS SEOUL add-ons also included event welcome messages at Seoul City Hall and in subway stations.
